City Of Great Dandenong Tree Works Permits

For Tree Removal on private land within the Greater Dandenong Council area, specific regulations must be followed. Here are the key points:

Permit Requirement:

You will need a permit to remove any tree with a diameter of 40cm or larger as measured 1.4 meters from the ground. This regulation aims to protect the urban forest and ensure the health and safety of the community.

Application Process:

  • Assessment by Arborist: An independent arborist must assess the tree. Their report should include details such as the tree’s species, diameter, height, health condition, and the need for removal.
  • Owner Consent: If you are not the property owner, you need the owner’s consent to process the application.

Pruning Regulations:

  • A permit is not required for pruning if it is done by a qualified arborist following the Australian Standard AS 4373-2007 for pruning amenity trees. The property owner must keep photographs of the trees before and after the work.
  • In emergencies where a tree poses an immediate hazard, pruning can be done without a permit if determined necessary by a qualified arborist.

Exemptions:

  • Trees that are dead, dying, structurally unsound, or causing property damage can be removed without a permit.
  • Trees with a trunk diameter less than 40cm (measured at 1.5 meters above ground) do not require a permit.
  • Trees not listed on the Significant Tree Register or part of a listed group are also exempt from needing a permit.

Fees:

The application fee for a tree removal permit is $113 per tree, but this fee is waived for applications submitted before July 1, 2024.
